Doula Reflections - World Doula Week 2025

Page 1 journal entry reflections for World Doula Week, which occurs March 22-28 every year. It begins with World Doula Day on March 22.

E I G H T - 8 - I N F I N I T Y and Beyond.

I can’t believe it has been officially 8 years serving communities as a birth and postpartum doula. When I walked into this calling 8 years ago, while attending my first doula training in Toronto, I received instant confirmation that this is where I belong. Knowing and understanding that I am meant to live a life of service, stepping into the call to be a doula - Greek word which means a woman who serves - it clicked. I just knew I was finally on the right path. Now, 8 years later, I realize that I was so in alignment that I received my “doula initiation” during World Doula Week!

My initial trainings were done through DONA. At the time, I dived in without much research or extra thought. I was at an advantage during that time to fly for free (from a written prayer manifestation). I ventured to Toronto, Canada to learn birth doula information and techniques. I enjoyed this so much for the personal growth I received while solo traveling abroad. I learned more about myself and my resilience through this training. As the only American and woman of color in the class, I gained insight to another world of birth and saw immediately the need for doula support in underserved communities.

CN Tower in Toronto, Canada. I saw this in my passing on the way to fly back to the US after my Birth Doula training.

One week I was training for births in Canada and the next, I was In Dallas expanding on postpartum skills. I stepped away from my trainings ambitions, inspired, and excited to leave my mark on birth work. Years went by and I strengthened my gifts and knowledge through supporting many first time moms, expanding skills through various trainings, and truthfully found myself along the way.

Being a doula is more than serving women through their sacred transition of life; it is reigning original traditions that have always existed. It is healing work that impacts generations to come.

Around 2020, I was given a spiritual message that I was meant to be a doula of the new world, and I believe that time has come. Transformational energy work is needed right now. We can all see and physically feel that this is not the same world we lived in a few years back. I have found my most impactful work is through returning to our roots of maternal-centered care, prioritizing the needs of the pregnancy woman and moms to transform bloodlines - ultimately preservation of the underserved.

Having two (unassisted) home births of my own and my personal doula service experiences, I know my calling it to influence and encourage natural, physiologically led care, and out-of-hospital based births. In the new world, much more than obstetricians should know the process of birth.

And we do know - we just need help remembering.

In the coming weeks, I will share more offerings to transform this new world into the greatest witnessed in a very long time.

I am so grateful to be able to support others on their initiation through motherhood and beyond. Let my work be a testament to the good works of the most high.

With love & Gratitude, Jemila
